Rothwell is the hinge between Deception Bay and the peninsula, and it has its own postcode to itself, 4022, which is unusual for a suburb this size. The housing strings out along the main road and the pockets behind it, older homes from the first wave mixed with newer builds that filled the gaps later. The pools follow that mix. Some are original, pebblecrete and a single speed pump, and some went in last decade with a fibreglass shell and a decent pad. A renovator working here needs to be comfortable with both, because the two jobs barely resemble each other.
We connect you with experienced local renovators who cover Rothwell and quote what the pool in front of them actually needs.
Two different pools, two different jobs
On the older pools the work is structural and cosmetic together. A worn interior, cracked or lifted coping, drummy waterline tiles, and a barrier that has drifted out of line with the current standard. That is a full drain-down job and it makes sense to do the surface, the tiles and the coping as one piece of work rather than three visits. See pool resurfacing and tiling and coping.
On the newer pools the interior is fine and the conversation is about efficiency and detail: a better pump, a chlorinator that keeps up through February, a tile repair, a coping stone that has moved. See equipment upgrades.
Between two markets on price
Rothwell sits between the premium end of the peninsula and the value end of Deception Bay, and quotes here can vary more than people expect for the same job. That is not always bad faith, it usually reflects what each contractor assumes about access, waste removal and the state of the shell underneath the old surface. The way to compare honestly is to get the quote broken down by stage, so painting, resurfacing, tiles, coping and equipment each carry their own number. The cost guide shows the guide ranges those stages normally fall in.
Licensing and the practical bits
In Queensland, building work valued over $3,300 generally requires a QBCC licensed contractor, and any electrical work on the pad has to be done by a licensed electrician. Pool water has to be discharged in line with Unitywater requirements rather than into the street stormwater. Neither of those is something you should have to raise, and a contractor who covers it before you ask is usually a good sign about the rest of the job.
Frequently asked questions
Should I resurface and upgrade the equipment at the same time?
If the budget allows, yes. The pool is already empty and the pad is already open, so you pay for one mobilisation instead of two.
My pool is fibreglass, not concrete. Can it be renovated?
Yes. Fibreglass shells can be resurfaced with the right system, and the coping, tiles and equipment around them are renewed much as they are on a concrete pool. Say so at the quote stage because the products differ.
How long does a full renovation take?
Most straightforward jobs run one to three weeks end to end, depending on the surface chosen, the curing time and the weather. Coping and tile work adds to that.
