Deception Bay has a lot of pools and most of them are old. The bay frontage and the streets behind it filled through the 1970s and 80s with affordable family housing, and the backyard pool was part of that package, so the 4508 postcode now holds hundreds of concrete shells in their fourth decade. Further inland the newer estates have added a second layer of much younger pools. The sand underfoot is the same across both, and so is the thing people actually want to know when they call: what is the least I can spend to make this pool good again, and what am I giving up by spending it.

We connect you with experienced local renovators who answer that question straight rather than quoting the biggest version of the job.

Thirty and forty year old pools

A pool of that age has usually had one surface its whole life. Rough underfoot, staining that no amount of chemistry clears, pebbles in the skimmer basket and a waterline tile band that is drummy in places. None of that means the pool is finished. The shells from that era were built solidly and the structure is normally sound, which is why Deception Bay is a strong market for renovation rather than replacement. The full answer is pool resurfacing with the waterline tiles and coping renewed in the same drain-down. See tiling and coping.

Painting and staging the work

Where the budget is not there for a full resurface, painting a sound shell is a real option, not a consolation prize. On guide pricing it runs around $2,000 to $5,000 against roughly $8,000 to $15,000 for a pebble resurface, and it gives you several presentable years while you decide. The other way to manage it is staging: surface now and coping next year, or equipment first if the pump is the thing costing you money every month. Ask for the quote broken into stages so you can see what each piece costs on its own. See pool painting and the cost guide.

Sandy ground and bay air

Close to the bay the water table sits high, so draining a concrete pool is planned around the hydrostatic valve and the weather rather than just booked in for a Monday. Sand works its way into the water and through to the filter. Bay air works on the gate hardware and the equipment pad. Pool water has to be discharged in line with Unitywater requirements rather than into the street stormwater, and any electrical work on the pad has to be done by a licensed electrician.

Frequently asked questions

Is my old pool worth fixing or should I fill it in?

Nearly always worth fixing if the shell is sound. Filling a pool in is its own cost, and a renovated pool is usually a better outcome for the property. A renovator will tell you if the structure has genuinely gone.

Why is my water level dropping?

It might be evaporation, it might be a fitting, a skimmer throat or a light niche. On sandy ground a leak leaves no wet patch, so it is worth confirming before you pay for a new surface. See leak detection.

Do I need to do everything at once?

No. Staging is common here and a good contractor will price it that way without making it awkward.
